  1. Drug that acts like adrenaline on the
  2. sympathetic nervous system (sympathomimetic).
  3. Once used to relieve bronchospasm in asthma,
  4. it has been superseded by safer, more
  5. specific drugs. It is contained in some cold
  6. remedies as a decongestant. Side effects
  7. include rapid heartbeat, tremor, dry mouth,
  8. and anxiety. Ephedrine is an alkaloid,
  9. C10H15NO1, derived from Asian gymnosperms
  10. (genus Ephedra) or synthesized. It is
  11. sometimes misused; in 1990 an Australian
  12. truck driver collided with a coach after
  13. taking ephedrine to stay awake. Excess leads
  14. to mental confusion and increased confidence
  15. in one's own capabilities as they actually
  16. decline.
